1) Burn more calories.
Muscles burn more calories than fat, so it's smart to build muscle. Plus, when you do a weight-training program, your metabolism stays elevated and you continue to burn calories AFTER your workout is over. #yesplease During cardio exercise, you stop burning calories shortly after the workout. Who doesn't want to burn calories after your workout!?
2) Change your body shape.
This has been the case for me, personally, as well as numerous women I've worked with. I didn't see my body start to change, or my goals met, until I started incorporating regular weight workouts into my week. Cardio can help you slim down and drop weight, but weight training is what shapes and TONES your body. Dropping just 3% of your body fat can equal 3 inches gone off your hips and thighs. And no, you won’t bulk up—women don’t have enough muscle-building hormones to gain a lot of mass like men do. Women who bulk up have used vitamins, supplements, and intense diet regimens to look that way. You won't. If you keep your diet clean, you'll burn fat while also building muscle and TONING your body. The workout program included in my TONE Your Body Program has a focus on weight training, while also incorporating high intensity interval training (HIIT) cardio workouts to help you maximize calorie burn and toning.
3) Boost your metabolism.
More muscles = quicker metabolism. When you diet without incorporating weights into your workouts, 25% of the weight loss can be muscle loss. We need muscles for so much more than just toning and shaping our bodies. They're a key ingredient in your metabolism. Weight training, mixed with a clean diet, can help you build muscle. Look at it this way: the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism and the more calories you'll burn all day long.
4) Get stronger and more confident.
Lifting weights (and I'm not talking crazy heavy weights....just enough to build muscle) helps make every day tasks much easier. Things like carrying your kids, lifting groceries, walking up steps. Simple every day tasks. The Mayo Clinic says that weight training regularly can make you 50% stronger in 6 months! If strength doesn't excite you, think about confidence. Weight training has given me, personally, confidence. When I started building muscle, shaping my body, and getting stronger, I started feeling a new found confidence. I felt better, was happy with how I was looking, and felt like Super Woman for being able to do things that others couldn't. :) Simply put, it builds emotional strength by boosting your self-esteem. Who couldn't use that?
